CITY COUNCIL AT LARGE POSITION 4 CANDIDATE AND

SMALL BUSINESS ADVISOR TIKO HAUSMAN COMMENTS ON HOUSTON FLOODING CONSIDERATIONS

Multi-modal transportation advocate and business consultant, Tiko Hausman, recommends forward-thinking projects to mitigate city damage from flooding, in the wake of Tropical Storm Imelda.

Hausman said, “Our city must be focused on proactive solutions to improve the livability of Houston. I am concerned that the approved expansion of Interstate 45, including plans to lower the freeway in some areas, will further make our roads impassable, in the type of weather we just experienced. Additionally, our City Council approved, without discussion, a developer’s plan to build hundreds of homes in a west Houston flood plain. That worries me, and should worry Houstonians.”

Hausman further commented, “The current method of planning transportation projects is flawed.  The expansion plans were designed long before Harvey or Imelda. Houston is a unique city of bayous.  We require an approach that puts citizens first.  Building our way out of congestion doesn’t work and it exacerbates flooding issues.  It hasn’t worked for I-10.  Investing in multi-modal transportation to reduce traffic and redesigned green infrastructure will work.  Our city must embrace innovative solutions to our problems.  We can do better.”

Tiko Hausman, candidate for Houston City Council at-Large Position 4, is an acclaimed community builder and advocate for small, women and minority owned-businesses.  She was named a Rising Star by the League of Women Voters and Recipient of the Greater Houston Business Procurement Forum Strategic Partner Award.
